BYAN Completes 3-Day Training on Disability Rights, Inclusion and Advocacy Based on CRPD and SDGs

Lalgadh -Dhanusha / Simara -Bara, Asoj Septemebr 25 to 27 and 28 to 30, 2026 – Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) has completed a three-day training on Disability Rights, Inclusion and Advocacy under the YATRA project, supported by CBM Global. Grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the training aimed to build the capacity of young leaders from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).

Structure. The training ran in two clusters. The first, for Mahottari, Dhanusha and Sarlahi, was held on 25–27 September 2026 (Asoj 9–11, 2083) in Bardibas, Mahottari. The second, for Bara, Chitwan and Rautahat, was held on Asoj 12–14, 2083 at Hotel Shreshtha Residency, Simara, Bara. Each OPD was asked to nominate two youth representatives (one woman, one man), prioritizing youth board members. The training was residential, with BYAN covering food, lodging and local transport. A Training Needs Assessment (TNA) form was collected beforehand.

Content.

  • CRPD fundamentals: Participants learned the Convention's background (adopted 13 December 2006; Nepal signed 3 January 2008, ratified by Parliament 27 December 2009, became a State Party on 6 May 2010), its 50 articles and eight principles, and the Committee's 2018 recommendations to Nepal. A key message was that the CRPD creates no new rights; it requires states to make existing rights work for persons with disabilities.
  • Articles 1 and 2: A "Card A – Card B" matching game helped participants learn key terms such as reasonable accommodation, universal design, communication, language and discrimination on the basis of disability.
  • SDGs and disability: Sessions covered the 17 goals and 169 targets, the "Leave No One Behind" pledge, and the goals that directly reference disability (4, 8, 9, 10 and 11).
  • CRPD–SDG linkage: Participants worked through a mapping of 18 CRPD articles to SDG targets, such as Article 9 (accessibility) with targets 9.1, 11.2 and 11.7, and Article 24 (education) with targets 4.5 and 4.a, and discussed what local governments should do.
  • Human rights checklist: Participants completed a 20-point assessment of rights in their own localities.
  • Evidence-based advocacy: Five case studies, on an accessible ward office, school enrolment, health post access, disability ID card distribution and local budgeting, showed how OPDs used surveys, household studies and budget analysis to win concrete changes.
  • Advocacy skills: Participants learned six areas of specialized knowledge and a nine-step advocacy formula (problem, evidence, right, SDG, power, message, demand, negotiation, outcome), and practised distinguishing a complaint from an evidence-based advocacy message.
